Care Instructions for crystal

Caring for Your Crystal

Fine, handblown crystal can easily last you a lifetime if you take the proper care of it.  There are some basic rules to follow in order to keep your crystal looking its best.

  • When storing your crystal, make sure you have ample room for each glass and never store glasses on the rim.
  • After using your crystal, rinse the glasses as soon as possible.  Never use a dishwasher as the high heat and abrasive detergents may damage crystal.
  • When washing by hand, it is a good idea to line the bottom of the sink with a rubber mat, thick dish towel or washcloth in order to avoid breakage.
  • Always use warm soapy water and a mild detergent.  Serious wine enthusiasts believe that soap leaves a residue that affects the taste of the wine.   They suggest using washing soda (found in the detergent aisle) or baking soda.
  • To remove stains, you may use a swirl a handful of uncooked rice in warm water with lemon juice or vinegar.  This is especially handy for hard-to-reach spots like in vases.  For problem stains, use a denture-cleaning tablet, but monitor the process.  Never soak your crystal.
  • To remove spots, try using vinegar on a cloth.  Some retailers recommend using a spot of ammonia, however use extreme caution with any harsh chemical.  My mother always used a mixture of dish detergent, a dash of ammonia and warm water to bring out the dazzle in her crystal.
  • After all that hard work, make sure you dry your crystal by hand with a lint-free cloth.  Some people use absorbent towels for the first dry and then shine up the crystal with a lint-free cloth.  The choice is up to you!
