“New Ideas in Swedish Glass”

Bill Geary, a Swede by marriage, came to glass in 1985 when he went to the New York Experimental Glass Work Shop in Manhattan, New York and started blowing glass with the help of glass artist, John Brekke, his teacher.

Three years later, he resigned his position as a senior officer in a major reinsurance company and went to Sweden to attend the Orrefors Glass School while his wife set up and managed Galleri Orrefors in Stockholm.

Over the years, Bill and his wife Margareta built a collection of Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish glass. This permitted him to study the forms, and techniques unique to Scandinavian glass.

He wrote and produced a video tape ”Lyricism of Swedish Glass” which was shown on PBS Television in Colorado and New Mexico.

His book “Scandinavian Glass – Creative Energies”, published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd, explores what happens when artists with no experience in glass came to the glass works and asked the question “what if we tried this new idea”.

His experiences as an appraiser of glass while a member of the Appraisal Association in America exposed him to historic and contemporary art and production glass created in America and Europe.

With these unique experiences and a passion for glass, he has brought new ideas to Swedish glass, working with the best glass blowers in Sweden to make these concepts reality.
