Every hundred years or so, the Swedish glass industry is energized by a movement or significant glass personality.
One such person is a young glass blower at the Pukeberg Glass Works where he utilizes his abilities and passion for glass to create wonderful works of art.
Micke Johansson was born in 1972. He grew up in Nybro, Sweden. At an early age, he demonstrated an ability to work with his hands and feet, manipulating materials and becoming a very good soccer player.
In 1988, he was accepted at the age of 16 into the Orrefors Glass School located at the internationally famous glass works. He was also hired to work at the Orrefors Glass Works while attending school.
His creative spirit emerged during free time when he would create unusual designs in glass.
Upon graduation in 1989, he continued working at Orrefors Glass Works. At the age of 23, he was designated as a Master Glass Blower by the management of this prestigious glass firm.
During his work at Orrefors, he executed the designs of many internationally recognized Swedish glass artists associated with the company including Gunnar Cyren, Lars Hellsten, Olle Alberius and Ulrica Hydman Vallien.
In 2000, he was awarded a stipend to attend Dale Chihuly’s glass studio located at Pilchuck, Washington.
Micke studied and worked with Lino Tagliapetra and Ben Edols.
The Glass Museum at Vaxjö, Sweden in 2001, awarded Micke the Hald & Gate Stipendum for his important work with glass.
In Venice, Silvano Signoretto hosted this young Master for a six week stay where he worked at the Signoretto & Bastianello glass works. During this experience, he learned many historic and important Venetian glass working techniques which he is now utilizing in his art glass.
The management at Pukeberg Glass Works saw the potential for this artist when applying his glass blowing talents to the creation of wonderful art glass utilizing Swedish and Italian glass techniques. During January, 2004, he became associated with the Pukeberg Glass Works.
