Monica Backström

Monica Backström. Born 1939. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1965, she has a studio at Boda glassworks.

Nature is the vast source of inspiration from which Monica Backström takes sustenance for her designs. As a trained silversmith she made her breakthrough with bold experiments to encapsulate metal within the glass melt, and throughout her subsequent career has playfully experimented with the possibilities of the material, both in art glass and utility glass, as well as her own collection of jewelry in glass and silver. Organic, ”growing” forms are a strong feature of Monica Backström’s work, and in recent years she has also begun to explore space in her art glass, including a series of sparkling ”moonstones” with names such as Moonrockers, Super Nova and Cosmos Garden.
