Champagne Flutes | |||||||
|
Champagne flutes are characterized by a long stem with a tall, narrow bowl on top. The shape
is designed to not only keep sparkling wine chilled during its consumption but also to direct the bubbles to the top and concentrate the aroma . The glass is designed
to be held by the stem to help prevent the heat from the hand from warming the champagne.
The bowl itself is designed in a manner to help retain the signature carbonation in the
beverage. This is achieved by reducing the surface area at the opening of the bowl.
Flutes are designed to keep the bubbles active.
The coupe style glass (wide saucer shape) is rumoured to have been designed from molds of Marie Antoinette's bosom. This type of glass, however, is not the best choice for most champagnes. Rather the coupe style glass is designed for aromatic and sweet sparkling wines. The wide mouth is better suited to present their aromatic richness whereas a smaller mouth would lessen the experience of their aromas. Champagne flutes are often used at formal engagements, such as award ceremonies and weddings as well as to ring in the New Year. Sometimes they are called wedding flutes and toasting flutes. Ordinarily, the champagne flute glass has a volume of about 7 ounces (180 ml). |
